The Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Sisonke booster trial is set to kick off on Wednesday.

That’s according to the Director of the Desmond Tutu HIV Centre, Professor Linda-Gail Becker. It was initially intended to start on Monday but was delayed due to technical glitches.

The J&J jab will be administered to healthcare workers who received their initial dose during the first phase of Sisonke study between February and May this year.

“The countries that have been vaccinating for longer are moving to boost their healthcare workers and older people,” Dr Becker said.

“The reason for that is that the immunity in older people is waning. There are concerns that the immunity has reduced over time.

“So because our healthcare workers were given the vaccine way earlier, we feel it’s important to increase their immunity with the view that we may be facing a surge in new infections, so we want to protect those individuals as soon as possible.
