Professor Jerry Coovadia dies at age 83

Top paediatrician, anti-apartheid activist, and international authority on HIV/AIDS, Professor Jerry Coovadia, has died at the age of 83. Coovadia became world-renowned for his ground-breaking research on the mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS.

Twenty years ago, he incurred the wrath of Thabo Mbeki’s AIDS-denialist government by insisting on scientific integrity and campaigning for the rollout of antiretroviral therapy in the late 1990s and 2000s.

Hoosen Mohammed, better known as Jerry Coovadia, was born on the 2nd of August in Durban in 1940. His grandparents arrived in South Africa around the 1880s. His father and mother were descendants of Indian businesspeople and property owners.

He grew up on Wills Road in Warwick Triangle, near the old Indian market. His mother had a big influence on his life. It’s from her that he learned a love for language and reading and later developed a deep appreciation of English literature, although she read in Gujurati. He was an avid reader and also enjoyed poetry, especially the works of Keats and Wordsworth.
