5 nabbed at SA-Lesotho border after almost R1.5 million found in concealed bags

The Border Management Authority (BMA) said it was continuing to take a no-nonsense approach at the country’s borders following the latest sting operation.

A handful of people were arrested this past week at the Qashasnek border between South Africa and Lesotho after they were found with almost R1.5 million in cash concealed in black plastic bags.

The Lesotho nationals were in a vehicle that was stopped during a routine check.

BMA Deputy Assistant Commissioner Mmemme Mogotsi said four of those arrested had been previously banned from entering South Africa under the Immigration Act.

“The four who did not have the requisite documents were arrested for being in South Africa illegally, and a case was opened.

“The money, which was counted and underwent counterfeit verifications, was then deposited into the state bank account pending further investigations on the matter.”

She said bi-national operations at the borders will continue in a bid to clamp down on crime.

“We will rigorously enforce the law and take decisive action against any illegal activities to maintain the integrity of our borders.”
