Police union POPCRU said that it expects newly-appointed ministers in the Criminal Justice Cluster (CJC) to be committed to transformative leadership that addresses historical injustices and contemporary challenges within the system.
The African National Congress (ANC)’s Senzo Mchunu is the new police minister, while FF Plus leader, Pieter Groenewald, is the minister of correctional services.
POPCRU’s Richard Mamabolo said that the CJC has for the longest time been under immense strain, with continued infighting, high levels of crime, police killings, overcrowding, and understaffing, all coupled with huge levels of backlogs in various areas.
“This new era brings about an opportune moment to remedy this past trend and to bring about much-needed confidence through cooperation with all stakeholders in working towards achieving stability.”
President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Cabinet, announced on Sunday night, reflects the Government of National Unity, with the Democratic Alliance (DA), the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP), the FF Plus, the Patriotic Alliance (PA), and the Pan Africanist Congress of Azania (PAC) taking up key posts in the national executive.
