Following a viral social media post of an inmate boasting about free education, free rental, and free food at Cape Town’s Goodwood Prison this week, Minister of Correctional Services Pieter Groenewald says the incident is a result of corrupt officials.
Goodwood Prison officials conducted a raid on his cell on Wednesday.
The inmate has now been moved to a maximum security section and further charged with the illegal possession of a cell phone.
Groenewald said that the department’s priority was to get rid of corrupt prison wardens in its ranks.
According to the minister, prisoners had been caught doing wrong things in prison and getting away with it.
“Some are actually operating a business within our prisons, and yes it is that some wardens just turn a blind eye. But I say again, I will see to it, and see it as part of my priority to ensure that there are no more blind eyes in prison,” Groenewald said.
