The South African Revenue Service (SARS) says it will continue to work closely with police to protect its officials working on high-profile matters.
This follows an assassination attempt on Advocate Coreth Naude, who has been acting on behalf of SARS in the tax inquiry involving a controversial businesswoman, Shauwn Mkhize.
It is understood that while driving into a hotel parking lot in the affluent suburb of uMhlanga on Wednesday night, two unknown men opened fire on her car.
The service has confirmed that she is recovering in a KwaZulu-Natal hospital following what it said was an assassination attempt on her life.
“Security is the view of our colleagues at SAPS [South African Police Service] and we do coordinate with them,” SARS spokesperson Siphithi Sibeko said.
“In cases where there are threats, the colleagues who are law enforcement agencies take a lead as far as those are concerned.”
