The case against a Riebeek West police officer arrested after allegedly assaulting relatives, including his sister has been postponed to next Friday for a bail application.

The accused appeared in the Malmesbury Magistrates Court on Monday, on a charge of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The 38-year-old sergeant was arrested following the incident this past Friday.

Police have confirmed that an internal disciplinary process has also been instituted.

Rural and Farmworkers Development Organisation’s Billy Claasen, attended court proceedings on Monday.

“We call on the SAPS [South African Police Service] and the National Prosecuting Authority to oppose bail as this police officer is a danger to the community and society at large. This also happened right at the beginning of Women’s Month and it’s clear that this police officer has no respect for women nor the rule of law.”

Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile said it was disconcerting that protectors of society found themselves on the wrong side of the law, at a time when the police’s efforts to curb gender-based violence and femicide should be heightened.
