John Steenhuisen says that the contribution of women in agriculture has made a substantial difference in growing the sector.

The Democratic Alliance leader and new Agriculture Minister revealed this during Friday’s commemoration of Women’s Day in Durban – where he met a group of unemployed local women spearheading a food garden project.

Steenhuisen said the initiative has grown into a viable small business that sells produce at local markets and supplies feeding schemes catering to hundreds of residents.

“We participated in planting and re-establishing food gardens that are run by women in the community to feed the local community, to feed children, and to ensure that there’s a little bit of opportunity to make a bit of money from selling crops.”

Steenhuisen said the DA has also given the women additional resources.

“We assisted with fencing, with the JoJo tank. This is just a small contribution we’re making towards the incredible work being done by these committed women in this project. And I think the more projects like this we can see around the country, the less people will go to bed hungry in the evenings.”
