The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has fired group executive, Zolani Matthews.

PRASA said Matthews’s termination was in line with his contract and in the interest of the entity.

The agency said it would remain focused on reopening all rail corridors and refurbishing more stations.

Matthews has now been axed for the second time from PRASA.

His contract was terminated with immediate effect in December 2021 after an investigation found he had deliberately failed to disclose that he held British citizenship.

He challenged his dismissal, and the parties entered a private arbitration process, which ruled that Matthews be reinstated.

The rail agency then took the matter to the Labour Court in a bid to set aside the ruling but failed.

In a statement released on Thursday, PRASA said it engaged with Matthews and his legal team to discuss the implications of the judgment and find a settlement. However, attempts to reach an agreement reportedly failed.

The agency said it would pay Matthews out for the remainder of his contract.
