The latest quarterly crime statistics have shown a slight decrease in cash-in-transit heists countrywide, with the North West as the only province that recorded an uptick in cases.
The latest numbers were released by the police ministry on Friday, to unpack the last quarter of the 2023/2024 financial period and the first quarter of this year.
While the North West remains a hotspot for cash van robberies, the national figures show a decrease from 60 to 36 in the current quarter.
“The cash-in-transit robberies we recorded decreased across all the three months and the only province that recorded an increase was North West, with an increase of one. And these are robberies of cash-in-transit, 20 of the incidents were when the armoured vehicle was on the road,” said South African Police Service’s major general, Norman Sekhukhune.
The latest figures also showed a decrease in carjackings.
