Former Msunduzi Municipality Deputy Mayor Mervyn Dirks has been appointed as the leader of the uMkhonto Wesizwe Party in the KwaZulu-Natal Legislature.
Dirks was expelled from the ANC in February for joining the MK party.
He became a Member of Parliament in 2014, and in later years served as the ANC Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) member for ANC in KZN.
He was the Whip of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) and was discharged from the committee in January 2022.
The MK Party Youth League congratulated Dirks on his new position: “MKYL KZN congratulates Hon. Mervyn Dirks on his new appointment as the leader of the main opposition party “MK party” in the KZN Legislature.”
He served as deputy mayor of Msunduzi from 2006 to 2010 when the ANC recalled the municipal leadership.
His involvement in politics dates back to the 1970s when he spearheaded the Happy Valley rent boycotts against the apartheid local councils and its race-based local authorities.
In the 1980s Dirks was part of the United Democratic Front (UDF) where he organized in the Midlands region, together with affiliate grassroots organizations of the UDF, until joining the African National Congress (ANC) in later years.
He joined the ANC and became a member of the ANC Regional Executive Committee for Moses Mabhida region in KZN.
