The fight against lawlessness continues to be a top priority for Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi, as the province contributes nearly 30% to the country’s overall crime rate.

Lesufi announced during his State of the Province Address (SOPA) on Thursday night that the rollout of e-panic buttons would be intensified in communities battling rampant crime.

He said Gauteng was making use of technology to eradicate lawlessness at hotspots.

“Gone are the days where you need to phone a call centre to call for the police to come and protect you. The mere pressing of an e-button positions our province to ensure that we are at the right time and the right place with law enforcement agencies.”

He said helicopters would also be used to combat crime.

“As I’m speaking to you now, 18 months ago when we met here, this province didn’t have helicopters [to fight crime]. Today, we have three helicopters that are ready to combat crime in our province.”
