A little girl who was allegedly poisoned is recovering in hospital. The six-year-old was being treated in Kgapane Hospital in Limpopo after her two-year-old sister died on the night of Monday, 16 August.

Allegedly the sisters’ 35-year-old mother poisoned herself and her children after she failed to pay R5 000 back to a burial society, which she allegedly spent improperly. Monday was apparently her last day to pay the money back.

Limpopo police spokesman Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo said police in Hlanganani were investigating cases of murder, attempted murder, and an inquest docket.

Allegedly, the woman prepared food for herself and her two daughters. She allegedly used a poisonous substance to contaminate the food to end her own life and those of her children,” he said.

“After eating the food, the woman and her children reportedly started vomiting and were rushed to Rotterdam Clinic. The youngest child was certified dead on arrival. The woman was transferred to Kgapane Hospital but unfortunately died on the way.

Social development MEC Nkakareng Rakgoale said: “We are urging all parents who are facing challenges in their families and relationships not to resort to killing and harming their children but to approach our social workers for advice and assistance.

“As the department, we have systems in place to ensure vulnerable children are protected and brought up in a conducive environment.

A team of social workers dispatched to the area will conduct assessments, and ensure that psychosocial support is provided to affected family members and other parties.
