Over 120 City of Johannesburg employees have been axed. Johannesburg Executive Mayor, Mpho Phalatse has confirmed the reversal of the appointment of some permanent employees. Phalatse claims the conversion of some employment contracts from fixed term to permanent was irregular and had been rescinded.

She was speaking on the sidelines of a title deed handover ceremony in Naledi, Soweto.

They were handed termination letters and a six-month salary payout. The decision comes after the new council declared the conversion of their contracts unlawful.

Phalatse says the previous administration erred when it approved the appointments.

“There’s a difference between political office and the administration. Political office handles political work. Yes, you may have people who are a political. But every administration has a right to interview people who understand their mandate,” says Phalatse.

According to Phalatse, the affected junior staff will be required to reapply for their positions. Meanwhile, the ANC which lost the city three months ago says it will investigate.

“We will be asking for clarity from the municipality. If there is a need for the provincial government to invoke Section 106 to look at the matter in detail we will do that,” says Lebogang Maile, Gauteng Cogta MEC. At the same time over 100 title deeds were handed out to RDP recipients in Naledi, Soweto.
