Enyobeni tavern owners launch bid to have charges dropped

The owners of the Enyobeni tavern in East London in the Eastern Cape have filed papers in the regional court to have charges against them dropped.

Siyakhangela Ndevu and his wife Vuyokazi Ndevu are facing charges which include allowing minors in the tavern and selling alcohol to them.

The couple was arrested following the death of 21 young people in June last year in Scenery Park. Defence lawyer Precious Daniel has told the court that the couple did not sell alcohol to minors.

The state has since called nine witnesses before the close of its case and presented video footage of the fateful day as part of its evidence. In the footage, Siyakhangela is seen selling alcohol and interacting with customers.
