The Western Cape Disaster Management Centre has urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads amid warnings of torrential downpours.

This follows a level 6 warning by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for disruptive rain and damaging coastal and interior winds. The inclement weather conditions are set to continue into Monday.

SAWS has warned that the upgraded warning will bring with it severe thunderstorms, leading to flooding and large amounts of small hail.

While emergency teams are on standby to assist residents who the severe weather has impacted, officials are calling on residents to ensure that drainage systems in their areas are cleared for water flow.

Residents in low lying are also advised to raise the floor level of their homes and dig trenches around their houses.
