DA Calls for Extension of Fuel Levy Relief to Ease Pressure on South Africans

Democratic Alliance has called on government to extend fuel levy relief measures for at least another month, warning that motorists and businesses are still under significant financial strain.

With fuel prices expected to remain volatile, the party argues that scrapping or reducing the levy prematurely would place additional pressure on already stretched households. The DA says the temporary relief introduced earlier has provided some breathing room, but more time is needed for consumers to recover.

According to the party, the fuel levy makes up a substantial portion of the overall petrol and diesel price, and keeping it reduced—even for a short period longer—could help cushion South Africans against rising transport and food costs. The DA has stressed that the knock-on effect of high fuel prices is felt across the economy, particularly in the cost of basic goods and services.

The party has urged the National Treasury to consider the broader economic climate before making a final decision. It argues that extending the relief would not only assist individual motorists but also support small businesses that rely heavily on transport, including logistics and delivery sectors.

In addition, the DA believes that continued relief could help stabilise inflation, which has been influenced in part by fluctuating fuel costs. The party maintains that government should explore alternative ways to offset revenue losses rather than placing the burden back on consumers too soon.

While government has yet to confirm whether the relief will be extended, the call adds to growing pressure from various sectors for intervention to keep fuel costs manageable.

As discussions continue, South Africans will be watching closely, hoping for measures that bring some stability to their monthly expenses in an already challenging economic environment.
