A man has been killed in a violent daytime shooting in the Overport area, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Emergency responders were dispatched to Crescent Street, near East Street Park, shortly before 13:30 on Sunday afternoon after reports of gunfire in the busy neighbourhood.

When paramedics arrived, they were met by a significant police presence, with officers from both the South African Police Service and municipal law enforcement already securing the scene.

According to initial reports, a man believed to be in his thirties was found lying at the location with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite attempts by medical personnel to assess and stabilise him, he was declared dead at the scene.

The circumstances leading up to the shooting remain unclear at this stage, and investigators have not yet confirmed a motive. Police are expected to open a murder case and begin gathering witness statements and forensic evidence from the scene.

Residents in the area described the incident as shocking, particularly given the time of day and the proximity to a public park where families and children are often present. The brazen nature of the attack has raised fresh concerns about violent crime in the area.

Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue. No arrests have been made at this stage.
