Suspect killed during shootout with police in Pietermaritzburg

A suspect has been shot and killed during a shootout with police at Edendale in Pietermaritzburg in KwaZulu-Natal. It’s alleged that seven suspects robbed an elderly female at a garage in the area. Community members caught one of the suspects and assaulted him before his accomplices managed to drag him away and fled in a getaway vehicle.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate(IPID) says police officers in the area who were monitoring a funeral responded to the robbery.

IPID Spokesperson Grace Langa says, “Those police officer were informed of the incident. They then chased behind the suspects. The suspects then fired shots towards the police officers who then retaliated. The scene ended at Kwamachibisa area where one of the suspects was fatally wounded as a result of police shooting and the other six managed to escape. Investigations are ongoing, dog unit is in the area to check if they can find the firearm used by the suspects to shoot at the police.”

Meanwhile, police in KwaZulu-Natal are investigating a case of robbery and murder after one person was shot and killed in Doonside, Amanzimtoti, south of Durban. It’s alleged that three suspects entered a shop pretending to be customers and robbed the owner at gunpoint.

Police say a security company responded to the robbery and one of the security guards was killed during a shootout with robbers.

Police Spokesperson Nqobile Gwala says, “Three unknown males entered the shop situated on Doonside old main road and posed as customers. Suddenly, they drew their fire arms and demanded cash. A panic button was pressed and the security officers responded and shots were fired towards the security. A 47 year-old-man sustained gunshot wounds to the upper body and was declared dead at the scene. The deceased firearm was also taken by the suspects
