Prophet killed in hail of bullets

Sophiatown residents were greeted by blood ahead of the start of the weekend when two separate shooting incidents struck the city.

Four people were killed in two separate incidents in Sophiatown, Joburg, on Friday, 6 October.

The first incident involved the killing at a church in Newlands.

The gruesome murder was captured on video and has since been doing the rounds on social media.

In the video clip, a prophet, who has since been identified as Prophet Dwayne Gordon, is seen standing in the pulpit in front of the congregation and preaching.

Just as he moved away from the pulpit, armed men could be seen entering the church.

Panicked shouts from the congregation could be heard in the background. One shouted ‘blood of Jesus’ until the camera was no longer visible.

It is believed that the Prophet Gordon was a special guest at the Restoration Conference hosted by Pastor Mervyn and Mary Camphor.

According to Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi of the Gauteng police, a group of about six unknown men attacked a congregation at Newlands Church.

“The suspects fired shots and three people were injured. One of the victims, who succumbed to his injuries, was identified as the pastor of the church. They robbed the people of their mobile phones and other belongings before fleeing the scene,” Dimakatso said.
She said one case of murder and two cases of attempted murder have been opened for further investigation.

In another incident, Dimakatso said a group of unknown entered a tavern at Kathrada Park in Sophiatown and shot indiscriminately at patrons before driving away in a white bakkie.

“Three people lost their lives while eight were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds,” she said.

The Provincial Commissioner of police in Gauteng, Lieutenant-General Elias Mawela, has strongly condemned these barbaric incidents.
