Residents of Johannesburg have been urged to remain on high alert as persistent rainfall continues to raise the risk of flooding across parts of the city.
The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS) has issued a flood warning following ongoing wet and cold conditions, with authorities cautioning that low-lying areas are particularly vulnerable to rising water levels.
According to the South African Weather Service (SAWS), the current weather pattern is expected to bring continued showers and thunderstorms, accompanied by cooler temperatures. These conditions increase the likelihood of localised flooding, especially in informal settlements and areas with poor drainage.
EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi has called on motorists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, warning that wet surfaces and reduced visibility could lead to dangerous driving conditions. He urged drivers to increase following distances and avoid taking unnecessary risks during heavy rainfall.
Authorities have specifically warned residents not to attempt crossing flooded bridges, rivers, or streams, as water levels can rise rapidly and become life-threatening. Parents have also been advised to keep a close eye on children, particularly in areas near open water sources.
“Our residents in low-lying areas must remain vigilant and avoid crossing river streams during daily activities,” Mulaudzi cautioned, adding that children should be kept away from rivers and drainage systems during this period.
The warning comes amid a broader pattern of severe weather affecting parts of Gauteng and other provinces. Recent downpours have already led to localised flooding in some areas, with infrastructure damage reported in parts of the country.
Emergency services remain on high alert and are closely monitoring conditions, ready to respond to any incidents related to flooding or storm damage. Disaster management teams have also been deployed to assess risks in vulnerable communities.
