KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has described the brutal killing of seven family members from the Newark area as a devastating tragedy that has shaken both the province and the country at large.
Ntuli delivered an emotional address at a joint funeral service held in KwaDukuza on Saturday, where grieving relatives, community members, and government officials gathered to pay their final respects to the victims.
Speaking to mourners, the Premier acknowledged the deep pain caused by the killings, emphasising that the loss extends far beyond a single household. He said the incident had left an entire community traumatised and raised serious concerns about the levels of violent crime.
“This is not just the pain of one family, but the pain of a community and a province,” Ntuli said. “We are here today under tragic circumstances, and we must stand together as we mourn these lives that were taken in such a cruel and senseless manner.”
The victims, who all lived in the Newark area, were laid to rest in a joint ceremony attended by hundreds of mourners. The atmosphere was heavy with grief, as family members struggled to come to terms with the scale of the loss.
Ntuli used the occasion to call for unity in the fight against crime, urging communities to work closely with law enforcement agencies. He stressed that stronger cooperation between residents and police is essential to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
“We cannot allow criminals to continue terrorising our communities,” he said. “We must work hand in hand with the police and ensure that those responsible for this horrific act are brought to justice.”
The Premier also reassured mourners that authorities are actively investigating the killings and are committed to apprehending those behind the attack. He reiterated the provincial government’s determination to strengthen safety measures and support affected families.
Although the motive behind the killings is still under investigation, the incident has sparked widespread outrage and concern across KwaZulu-Natal. Community leaders present at the funeral echoed calls for swift justice and tougher action against violent crime.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the urgent need to address crime in South Africa, with many citizens expressing growing concern over safety in their communities. The killing of seven members from one household has underscored the devastating impact such violence has on families and society as a whole.
As the victims were laid to rest, mourners were left grappling with profound grief and unanswered questions. For many, the hope now lies in justice being served and meaningful interventions being implemented to prevent such heartbreaking incidents from happening again.
Ntuli concluded his address by urging unity and compassion, calling on South Africans to support one another during times of tragedy and to stand together against the scourge of crime.
